Mystery Deepens as Family of Four Dies During Turkey Vacation; Pesticide Exposure Suspected

A vacation in Turkey turned tragic for a family of four after all members died from what was initially believed to be food poisoning. However, emerging evidence now suggests that toxic pesticide exposure at their hotel may have played a critical role.
The victims — a Turkish-German woman, her husband, and their two young children — had travelled from Germany to Istanbul for a holiday. They reportedly fell violently ill after eating popular street food in the Ortakoy area near the Bosphorus Bridge.
All four were admitted to a hospital on Wednesday. The children, 6-year-old Kadir and 3-year-old Masal, died the next day. Their mother, Cigdem Bocek, passed away soon after, and the father, Servet Bocek, died on Monday after several days in intensive care.
Dr. Abdullah Emre Guner, Istanbul’s Regional Health Chief, confirmed the deaths on X and said investigations were underway.
What Led to the Tragedy?
According to CNN Türk, the Bocek family arrived in Istanbul from Hamburg on November 9. They sampled several local dishes, including stuffed mussels, “kumpir” (a loaded baked potato), “kokorec” (grilled lamb intestines), and Turkish delight.
Shortly after, both children developed severe vomiting and nausea, followed by similar symptoms in the parents. The family visited a hospital on November 12 and were discharged, but the mother and children returned the next day with high fever and acute vomiting, and later died.
New Lead: Toxic Pesticide Exposure
Although food poisoning was initially suspected, Turkish media reports cited by CBS News indicate the family may have been exposed to a dangerous pesticide, possibly aluminium phosphide.
The chemical was allegedly sprayed in a ground-floor room of the Harbour Suites Old City hotel to kill bed bugs. Investigators believe the toxic fumes may have travelled through the ventilation system into the Bocek family’s first-floor room.
Adding to concerns, two other tourists reportedly fell ill at the same hotel on November 15.
Authorities have collected samples from bedsheets, pillows, water bottles, and blankets. Eleven individuals — including the hotel owner, staff members, and employees of the pest-control company — are now under investigation.
The Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate and the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office are jointly probing the case, while the Forensic Medicine Institute will determine the exact cause of death.
