Deepika Padukone Redefines Success: Big Box Office Numbers No Longer Drive Her Choices

Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywood’s most successful actresses, says she no longer feels driven by massive box-office figures or high-budget projects. After years of leading billion-rupee blockbusters, she has consciously started walking away from films that don’t resonate with her values or creative instincts.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Deepika explained that her understanding of success has evolved.
“At this point in my career, it’s no longer about Rs 100-crore or even Rs 500-600 crore films,” she said, noting that the size of a movie or the money offered is not what motivates her anymore.
Recently, the actress reportedly opted out of two big projects with Prabhas—Spirit and Kalki 2898 AD—because she insisted on fair compensation and an eight-hour workday. These choices reflect her growing focus on healthy work culture and long-term sustainability in the industry.
Deepika emphasised that authenticity is now her top priority.
“Anything that doesn’t feel genuine simply doesn’t work for me. Sometimes a project comes with a big paycheque and people assume that’s enough, but it isn’t. And sometimes smaller films with modest budgets feel right because I believe in the team or the message,” she said.
Her creative interests are also shifting from acting alone to nurturing new talent and stories. After producing films like Chhapaak under her banner KA Productions, she revealed that she now finds more meaning in empowering writers, directors, and emerging filmmakers.
“My team and I want to focus on enabling storytelling and supporting creative voices. That’s what excites me today,” she added.
Deepika also reflected on the unhealthy work norms that dominate the entertainment industry, particularly the glorification of fatigue and burnout.
“We’ve normalised overworking, and we confuse burnout with dedication. A human being only needs eight hours of work a day. You can give your best only when you’re mentally and physically well. Bringing exhausted people back to the set benefits no one,” she told the magazine.
As one of India’s highest-paid actresses, Deepika’s decision to step away from huge paydays and mega-budget films signals a major personal shift—one where emotional truth, ethical work culture, and meaningful storytelling matter more than commercial numbers.
