Massive Blast at J&K Police Station After Seized Explosives Detonate; Several Feared Dead

Srinagar witnessed a tragic and powerful explosion on Friday night after a large cache of confiscated explosive material stored inside the Nowgam Police Station suddenly detonated. Multiple bodies have been recovered from the debris, and the intensity of the blast caused severe damage to nearby structures, officials confirmed.

Blast Occurred During Forensic Examination

According to authorities, the explosion occurred while a forensic team and police personnel were examining the seized explosives—part of a major crackdown on a sophisticated “white-collar terror module” involving highly educated individuals, including doctors.

The injured have been shifted to the Indian Army’s 92 Base Hospital and Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for treatment. Senior officials have reached the site, and the entire area has been sealed off.

Background: Terror Network Uncovered by Nowgam Police

The Nowgam Police Station had recently uncovered a Jaish-e-Mohammed-linked terror module after identifying posters threatening major attacks on security forces and outsiders in Kashmir. The investigation revealed a disturbing network of radicalised professionals working under foreign handlers based in Pakistan and other countries.

The police had arrested multiple individuals dubbed “terror doctors,” including:

  • Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather, who was captured on CCTV placing terror posters. He was arrested on October 27, and an assault rifle was recovered from his medical college locker.
  • Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, detained after authorities seized nearly 3,000 kg of ammonium nitrate during raids on locations linked to him.
  • Dr. Shaheen Saeed, a colleague of Shakeel, who was arrested following further revelations.

Link to the Delhi Blast That Killed 13

The dismantling of this module came just days after a deadly explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, where a car bomb killed 13 people and injured over 20. Investigators say that another doctor, Umar Nabi, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that exploded.

NIA sources believe the suspects may have improperly assembled the improvised explosive device (IED), possibly in a panic triggered by the massive chemical seizures and ongoing raids.

Cause of the Police Station Blast Under Investigation

Authorities are now probing whether the accidental detonation in Nowgam was caused by instability in the stored explosives or a mishandling during the forensic examination. The scale of the explosion underscores the magnitude of the materials the terror module had accumulated before it was intercepted.
