Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir Face Criticism After India’s Loss To Australia; Mohammad Kaif Slams Team Selection

India’s disappointing loss to Australia in the second ODI has triggered strong criticism from former cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who accused team management — including captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir — of “injustice” over their team selection decisions. Australia clinched a two-wicket victory, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif expressed frustration over India’s bowling strategy and the decision to bench Kuldeep Yadav, describing it as a “clear injustice.” He argued that India’s team balance suffered as a result of fielding both Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy, insisting that only one of them should have played.
“I’ve been following Harshit Rana a lot, but he doesn’t seem to have a strength delivery,” Kaif said. “Bowlers like Siraj and Bumrah have their signature weapons — yorkers, pace, or slower ones. But Rana doesn’t have that defining skill. Play either Rana or Reddy, because both can’t play together. Kuldeep Yadav sitting out for this is a clear injustice.”
Kaif elaborated that Harshit Rana’s effectiveness is situational, working best when the required run rate is high, forcing batters to take risks. However, in lower-pressure situations where batters can play patiently, he felt Rana lacked the skills to trouble them.
“When the required rate is 9 or 10 runs per over, Rana’s change of pace works. But when the rate is around 5 or 6, the bowler needs more variation and tactical ability to outfox batters,” Kaif explained.
The former India batter also drew comparisons with Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who played a pivotal role in the match by taking four wickets. Kaif said that Kuldeep, as India’s premier spinner, would have thrived on the Adelaide surface if given a chance.
“If Zampa can turn the game with his spin, imagine what Kuldeep could’ve done on the same pitch. It was a huge mistake not to play him,” Kaif added.
As India heads into the final ODI, the team management faces mounting pressure to rethink its strategy and address the glaring gaps exposed in the series so far.
