Zohran Mamdani Delivers Powerful Speech Defending Muslim Identity Amid “Racist” Campaign Attacks

In an emotional and defiant speech, Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, vowed to proudly embrace his Muslim identity after a series of racially charged attacks from former Governor Andrew Cuomo and his allies.
Standing alongside faith leaders outside a Bronx mosque, the 34-year-old democratic socialist and outspoken critic of Israel spoke tearfully about the prejudice faced by Muslim New Yorkers. Mamdani recounted how his aunt avoided the subway after the 9/11 attacks due to fear of harassment, and how his own family once advised him to keep his faith private when entering politics.
“These are lessons many Muslim New Yorkers have been forced to learn,” Mamdani said. “And now, these same lessons are being used as closing arguments by Cuomo, Sliwa, and Adams.”
The campaign has taken an ugly turn in recent days, with Mamdani facing Islamophobic rhetoric from opponents. On a conservative radio show, Cuomo appeared to laugh when a host joked that Mamdani would “cheer another 9/11,” to which Cuomo responded, “That’s another problem.” At a later event, Mayor Eric Adams warned of “terrorist attacks” under a Mamdani administration, saying, “New York can’t be Europe… You see what’s playing out because of Islamic extremism.”
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa also falsely accused Mamdani of supporting “global jihad” during a debate earlier in the week.
Despite the attacks, Mamdani chose to focus his message on solidarity and resilience within New York’s Muslim community. “The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker,” he said. “For too long, we’ve been told to ask for less and accept whatever little we get. No more.”
He added, “I will not hide my faith or who I am. I will no longer stand in the shadows — I will stand in the light.”
Mamdani, who recently secured the endorsement of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, has been at the center of heated debate within the Democratic establishment over his criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian rights. His rise represents a growing movement of progressive, diverse voices demanding equity and representation in American politics.
