Explosion at US Explosives Plant Leaves Multiple Dead, 19 Still Missing

A powerful explosion at a military explosives factory in Hickman County, Tennessee, has left several people dead and 19 others unaccounted for, authorities confirmed on Friday. Rescue and emergency teams are combing through the wreckage in hopes of finding survivors.

The blast occurred at a facility operated by Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area. Aerial visuals shared by US media revealed scorched debris scattered across the site, with burned-out vehicles and the remains of what was once a factory building.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said investigators are searching for 19 missing individuals. “There are fatalities,” he acknowledged, without providing exact numbers. He described the destruction as “the most devastating scene that I’ve seen in my career.”

A single building at the facility was completely obliterated. When asked to describe its condition, Davis responded, “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone.”

The explosion was so forceful that it was heard over a large radius, and debris was reportedly spread across half a square mile. The cause of the blast remains unknown, and Davis said the investigation may take several days.

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area due to the possibility of secondary explosions. For the families of the missing, the wait has been agonizing.

“I’m sure there’s people who are angry, sad, and very upset, and I can understand that,” Davis said. “It’s hell on us. It’s hell on everybody involved.”

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said state and federal agencies are coordinating the response. “We ask Tennesseans to join us in prayer for the families impacted by this tragic incident,” he wrote on X.

Accurate Energetic Systems, founded in 1980, manufactures high-explosive materials and products for the US Department of Defense and industrial clients. The company has not issued a statement yet.

Just last month, it received a nearly $120 million Pentagon contract for the procurement of TNT.

Officials continue to search the ruins as families await answers.
