Second Arrest Made in Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attack Case

New Delhi:
The Delhi Police on Sunday arrested a second accused in connection with the recent attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a “Jan Sunwai” programme at her Civil Lines camp office.
The accused, identified as Tahseen Syed, is a close friend of prime accused Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimji (41). Syed was brought from Rajkot, Gujarat, on Friday night for questioning and confronted with Khimji to verify facts before being taken into custody.
According to police, Khimji had shared a video of Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh residence with Syed. In return, Syed transferred ₹2,000 to him and maintained regular contact prior to the attack.
Khimji, an autorickshaw driver from Rajkot, has a history of violence and liquor-related cases. Between 2017 and 2024, he was booked in five cases, including assault and illicit liquor possession, with multiple preventive actions taken against him under the Gujarat Prohibition Act and the CrPC. In 2021, he was externed under Section 56 of the Bombay Police Act.
Police records show Khimji once attacked a man with a sword in 2017 and, in 2022, injured himself with a blade during a domestic dispute to intimidate his family. He was also allegedly involved in illicit liquor smuggling.
Investigators have seized Khimji’s mobile phone for forensic examination to check whether he deleted crucial information. More than 10 people, including his friends and relatives in Rajkot, are being questioned.
Khimji told police he had gone to Delhi from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on August 19 to protest against the Supreme Court’s order on stray dogs, drawing parallels to Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption agitation.
A Delhi court has remanded him to five-day police custody as investigations continue.
