Mother, Newborn Die After Botched Delivery By Unqualified Man In Odisha

Berhampur:
A tragic incident in Odisha’s Ganjam district has led to the death of a woman and her newborn after a delivery was conducted by a man without a medical degree, police said on Sunday.
The accused, Mangulu Charan Pradhan (35) of Dengausta village, allegedly carried out the delivery at his nursing home on May 11 with the help of two Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), despite not being a qualified doctor.
Police said the family was misled into believing the facility had proper medical infrastructure. Based on this assurance, Roji Nayak, who had gone into labour, was admitted. After four hours, Pradhan and the ANMs attempted the delivery without any registered doctor.
The newborn died shortly after birth, while Roji passed away on the way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
Following a complaint from her husband, Babu Nayak, police arrested Pradhan from his village. The two ANMs — Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango — had earlier been arrested on May 19 and August 10 for their alleged roles.
Inspector-in-Charge Prasant Kumar Patra of Digapahandi police station confirmed the arrests and said investigations are ongoing into the illegal medical practice that cost two lives.
