Serena Williams Says She Lost 14 Kg With Weight-Loss Medication: “I Feel Great”

Tennis icon Serena Williams has revealed that she shed 31 pounds (14 kg) with the help of a GLP-1 weight-loss drug, which she began using after the birth of her second child. Speaking as part of a paid partnership with healthcare company Ro, Williams said the treatment has not only supported her weight loss but also improved her overall health, including better blood sugar control and reduced joint pain.

Initially, she admitted to taking the medication inconsistently but later committed fully to the treatment. “I feel great. I feel really good and healthy. I feel light physically and light mentally,” the 23-time Grand Slam champion told People.

In a video on Instagram, she explained her decision: “Taking care of yourself isn’t a weakness, it’s a power. I’ve never been about shortcuts, not in my career, and not in my health. I’m on a GLP-1 because it was the right tool to help me feel healthy.”

Williams, now 43, said her struggles with weight began in 2017 after the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia, via emergency C-section. Despite intense workouts, walking up to 20,000 steps daily, and trying diets ranging from vegan to high-protein, she struggled to return to a healthy weight. The challenge only grew after her second child, Adira.

“As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed it to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just got even harder. So, I decided to try something different,” she told Today.

Williams reported no side effects and is considering staying on the medication long-term, saying it has restored her body’s balance.

She and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, share two daughters—7-year-old Olympia and 2-year-old Adira. Notably, Ohanian is also an investor in Ro, the company Serena partnered with for her weight-loss treatment.

How GLP-1 Drugs Work

GLP-1 medications mimic a natural hormone released after meals, helping reduce appetite, increase fullness, and slow stomach emptying. This makes them effective for weight loss and diabetes management by also triggering insulin release. They are generally prescribed for obesity or diabetes, alongside recommended lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
