Uttarakhand Flash Floods: 9 Soldiers Feared Missing After Cloudburst Near Army Camp

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand:
Nine soldiers are feared missing after a sudden cloudburst triggered devastating flash floods near the Indian Army camp in Harshil, Uttarakhand on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:45 PM in the Dharali village area, located just 4 km from the military base.
According to officials, the cloudburst took place in the Kheer Ganga river catchment, unleashing a torrent of water and debris that damaged the army camp and nearby areas. “Despite the unit being cut off and 11 personnel feared missing, the troops continue operations with unwavering determination,” stated an Army update.
The statement hailed the soldiers’ courage and dedication under extreme conditions: “Their grit under extreme adversity reflects the true spirit of the Indian Army – resilient, selfless, and ever-ready to serve the nation.” Additional troops have been mobilised to intensify the ongoing rescue efforts.
Immediate Response
Within minutes of the cloudburst, 150 Army personnel were deployed to the site. Rescue teams began evacuating stranded villagers and delivering emergency aid. However, persistent rainfall throughout the afternoon and evening severely hindered operations.
Devastation in Dharali
Dharali, a key stopover en route to Gangotri and a hub of local tourism, saw significant destruction. As per Principal Secretary R K Sudhanshu, 40 to 50 buildings have been damaged. Helicopters, intended for rescue support, were grounded due to adverse weather.
CM’s Statement
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the situation “extremely sad and distressing.” He confirmed that SDRF, NDRF, and local authorities are engaged in relief work on a war footing.
Climate Vulnerabilities
The Indian Himalayan region, including Uttarakhand, remains highly susceptible to extreme weather events like cloudbursts, flash floods, and avalanches. Experts warn that the frequency and severity of such incidents are increasing due to climate change.
The Army continues to monitor the situation closely and has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected civilians.
