Mohammed Siraj Criticised for Costly Fielding Error During Fifth Test at The Oval

London
Mohammed Siraj found himself at the centre of intense criticism after a major fielding lapse during the fifth Test between India and England at The Oval on Day 4, allowing Harry Brook to escape dismissal at a crucial juncture.

During the final hour of the morning session, Prasidh Krishna delivered a short ball in the 35th over that was top-edged by Harry Brook. As the ball soared high, Krishna began celebrating what seemed to be a certain wicket. Siraj positioned himself perfectly under the ball and caught it cleanly, but in a costly error, he inadvertently stepped back and touched the boundary rope—converting a catch into a six.

Visibly distraught, Siraj buried his face in his hands, aware of the gravity of the mistake. The missed opportunity proved significant as Brook went on to remain unbeaten at the end of the session, shifting momentum in England’s favour as they pursued a target of 373 runs.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting did not hold back in his assessment of the blunder.

“What was he thinking? He wasn’t thinking at all,” Ponting told Sky Sports. “He didn’t have to move to take the catch. How costly might that be? Brook is still in and reads bowlers so well. He’s playing a Test innings like it’s T20.”

India’s former head coach Ravi Shastri praised the quality of the contest, calling it a brilliant display of Test cricket.

“That session was Test cricket at its best. It was a watchful first hour—good bowling, plenty of chatter, fielders in the batter’s face. Then came the counterattack. Brook did a Rishabh Pant,” Shastri said, referring to Brook’s aggressive intent and ability to disrupt rhythm.

Although India had reduced England to 106/3, Brook’s aggressive strokeplay helped England regain momentum. His counterattack was reminiscent of Rishabh Pant’s past game-changing innings, according to Shastri.

The series remains delicately poised as both sides continue to wrestle for control in the deciding Test.
