Mohit Suri On Choosing Newcomer Faheem Abdullah Over Arijit Singh For Saiyaara:

New Delhi:
Director Mohit Suri, known for shaping the soundscape of modern Bollywood with voices like KK and Arijit Singh, has now introduced a new vocal talent—Faheem Abdullah—as the lead voice behind the title track of his latest hit, Saiyaara.
In an interview with NDTV, Suri addressed the buzz around his decision not to feature Arijit Singh—his longtime collaborator and the voice behind many of his iconic tracks including Aashiqui 2—in the main song of Saiyaara.
“Arijit represents a cinema that I did 14 years ago. I love Arijit, and I did use him in one of the songs. But when I was looking for ‘that’ voice… I remembered how I found Arijit when KK didn’t quite match Emraan [Hashmi] in my earlier films. It’s only when you seek that you find,” Suri explained.
The spotlight now shines on Faheem Abdullah, whose soulful voice has propelled Saiyaara‘s title track into viral status. Suri shared that his choice reflects a personal creative philosophy—never to settle and always search for the new.
“I’m sick that way,” he joked. “I’m constantly looking for new voices. I thought Faheem was the voice I wanted for Ahaan [lead character]. You have to keep evolving—otherwise, you’re just living off yesterday’s success.”
Suri emphasized the value of taking creative risks, particularly when launching new talent.
“When I spoke to Akshaye [Widhani, CEO of YRF], I said: You have to give yourself room to fail. Failing with someone new isn’t so bad—it means you’re experimenting. But failing with someone established? That’s scarier—it means your basics are shaken.”
Supporting this outlook, Widhani added, “Even the success you get with someone new is so much more.”
