“Sonia Gandhi Cried for Batla House Terrorists”: Amit Shah Slams Congress in Parliament

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a strong attack on the Congress party during a parliamentary debate, accusing former party chief Sonia Gandhi of sympathising with terrorists involved in the 2008 Batla House encounter.
The encounter, which took place on September 19, 2008, in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, led to the killing of two Indian Mujahideen terrorists by Delhi Police. The operation also claimed the life of Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who died in the line of duty.
Recalling the incident, Shah said he was shocked to learn that Sonia Gandhi was in tears after the operation. “I remember Salman Khurshid leaving Sonia Gandhi’s house visibly emotional. I thought something serious had happened. Later, he revealed that she was crying over the Batla House encounter. If tears were to be shed, they should have been for Shaheed Mohan Sharma, not for terrorists,” Shah said in the Lok Sabha.
He further accused the Congress of having a soft stance on terrorism and claimed the party had no moral authority to question the current government’s efforts against terror.
Shah made the comments during a special discussion on Operation Sindoor, where he also confirmed that three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack had been neutralised in Operation Mahadev. He criticized Congress MP P. Chidambaram for questioning whether the Pahalgam attackers were of Pakistani origin, suggesting such remarks indirectly defended Pakistan.
“When Chidambaram doubts their origin, it seems the Congress wants to give a clean chit to Pakistan,” Shah remarked, adding, “I thought the opposition would appreciate that the terrorists were eliminated, but they appear disappointed instead.”
The Home Minister’s remarks came as part of a broader push to position the government as tough on terrorism, while portraying the Congress as weak or sympathetic to extremists.
