Assam Engineer Dies by Suicide, Names Two Seniors for Forcing Her to Approve Fake Bills

A 30-year-old assistant engineer with Assam’s Public Works Department (PWD), Jyotisha Das, was found dead in her rented home on Tuesday afternoon in a suspected suicide. In a handwritten note, she accused two senior officials of pressuring her to approve fraudulent bills for incomplete work, citing immense mental stress as the reason for taking the drastic step.

In the note, Jyotisha wrote, “I am taking this step due to extreme stress from my work. There is no one to guide me in the office. I am tired and have nowhere to go. My parents are worried for me.”

Following her death, her family filed an FIR, prompting police action. Two officials—Dinesh Medhi Sharma, a newly promoted Superintendent Engineer who previously served in Bongaigaon, and Aminul Islam, a Sub-Divisional Officer currently posted there—have been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a detailed probe into the matter. Authorities confirmed that not only will the suicide be investigated thoroughly, but the work related to the contested bills will also be re-evaluated for cost and quality.

“We are investigating all aspects. The building tied to the alleged fake billing will be assessed, and the entire costing will be re-examined,” police said.

The tragic incident has sparked fresh concerns over workplace harassment and the ethical pressures young professionals face in public service roles.
