Software Engineer Detained Over Threatening Emails Targeting Golden Temple

A 24-year-old software engineer, Shubam Dubey, has been detained from Faridabad in connection with five threatening emails sent to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), warning of a possible attack on the Golden Temple, officials said on Friday.
According to police, Dubey is currently being questioned about the first email, which was received by the SGPC on July 14. His laptop and mobile phone have been seized as part of the investigation.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that Dubey, a BTech graduate with experience at several firms, has no prior criminal record. His detention was facilitated by the Punjab Police cybercrime unit, in coordination with central intelligence agencies. While Dubey has not yet been formally arrested, officials consider his detention a significant step forward in the ongoing investigation.
The SGPC, the apex religious body of Sikhs, reported that five emails threatening to bomb the Golden Temple were received since July 14. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami questioned whether these threats stem from a disturbed individual or are part of a deeper conspiracy aimed at spreading fear among devotees.
Responding to the situation, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann urged citizens to stay alert and not fall prey to misinformation. He emphasized that the state government remains committed to ensuring public safety and has taken the threats seriously. Mann held a security review meeting in Chandigarh with Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav and other top officials.
Meanwhile, political leaders expressed grave concern. Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, said the threats have unsettled both the Sikh community and peace-loving citizens. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also labeled the emails as a serious matter that warrants thorough investigation.
