Body of Missing Delhi University Student Found in Yamuna River After Six Days

New Delhi:
The body of 19-year-old Delhi University student Sneha Debnath, who had been missing for six days, was recovered from the Yamuna River, police said on Sunday. A native of Tripura, Sneha’s remains were identified by her family, and have been sent for a post-mortem examination.

According to officials, Sneha took a cab on July 7 to Signature Bridge in north Delhi. Her family in Tripura had been searching for her since her sudden disappearance.

During the investigation, authorities discovered a handwritten note left by Sneha, indicating she had intended to die by suicide. While her academic performance was not a concern, police sources indicated her distress stemmed from personal issues within her family.

Using technical surveillance, investigators traced her last known location to Signature Bridge. A cab driver confirmed he had dropped her there. Eyewitnesses also reported seeing a young woman standing on the bridge shortly before she vanished.

A large-scale search operation was launched with support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), spanning the Yamuna from Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Her body was eventually located near a flyover in the Geeta Colony area, approximately 10 kilometers downstream.

Sneha had reportedly sent emails and messages to her close friends in the early hours of July 7, expressing signs of emotional turmoil. Friends told investigators she had appeared distressed for several months.

Concerns have also been raised about the surveillance infrastructure in and around Signature Bridge. Her family and friends allege that none of the CCTV cameras in the area were operational when she went missing.
