Javed Akhtar Defends Diljit Dosanjh Amid ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ Controversy: “If It’s Banned, Indian Money Will Suffer, Not Pakistani”

New Delhi:
Renowned lyricist, screenwriter, and poet Javed Akhtar has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3, which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. Speaking at the NDTV Creators Manch event, Akhtar extended support to Diljit and urged both the government and the censor board to approach the issue with understanding.

When questioned about the backlash against Diljit for working with a Pakistani co-star, Akhtar remarked that the film was reportedly shot before the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. “What could he have done? The movie was made before the incident. He had no idea something like this would happen,” Akhtar said. “It’s not Pakistani money at stake—Indian investment is. So what’s the point in banning it?”

He further added, “If Diljit had known this situation would arise, he likely wouldn’t have worked with a Pakistani actress. I believe the authorities should show some empathy. Tell him not to repeat it, but since the film was completed earlier, it should be allowed to release.”

The Sardaar Ji 3 Controversy:

Diljit Dosanjh’s latest film released globally on June 22—except in India.

The controversy erupted after the trailer for Sardaar Ji 3 was released, revealing Hania Aamir’s role. Backlash followed swiftly. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) sent a letter to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali—who is working with Diljit on another project—urging him to cut ties with the actor.

The letter stated, “Your association sends a conflicting message, especially given your reputation for socially conscious cinema. We urge you to reconsider your collaboration with Dosanjh and disengage from artists officially boycotted by FWICE. The dignity of our nation and industry should come before professional or commercial interests.”

FWICE has also urged the Indian government to take strict action, including blacklisting Diljit and the Sardaar Ji 3 team from the industry. The federation has even appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke their passports and cancel their citizenships.
