UP Man Confesses to Killing Wife in Delhi Hotel, Arrested After Distress Call to Police

New Delhi:
A 24-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room in Delhi’s Paharganj area after her husband called the police from Uttar Pradesh, confessing that he had strangled her to death over suspicions of infidelity, officials said on Saturday.

The accused, Gopal Sharma (24), fled to his hometown in Mathura after the crime. He later made a distress call to the UP Police emergency helpline (112), admitting to killing his wife, Kriti Sharma. Acting on the tip, Mathura Police traced and detained him at the Highway Police Station before handing him over to Delhi Police.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan, the Mathura police informed the manager of the New Victoria Hotel in Paharganj around 3 a.m. on Saturday and asked him to check the room booked by the couple. The manager, Prem Kumar, found the woman lying unresponsive on the bed and immediately alerted local authorities. Police confirmed she had been strangled.

Investigations revealed that Gopal and Kriti had checked into the hotel around 6:35 p.m. on June 20. Around 9 p.m., Gopal left the hotel alone, telling the staff he was stepping out for food — but he never returned.

During interrogation, Gopal confessed to killing his wife during a heated argument triggered by his suspicions of her having an extramarital affair. In a fit of rage, he strangled her, police said.

The couple, both residents of Mathura, had traveled to Delhi for reasons yet to be determined.

A case of murder has been registered. Kriti’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and efforts are underway to contact her family. Further investigation is ongoing.
