“Loyal To Congress For 16 Years, Any Differences Can Be Resolved Privately”: Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who has recently been in the spotlight over his differing views with some party colleagues, has downplayed reports of internal conflict. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Tharoor reaffirmed his commitment to the party, stating that any disagreements should be addressed discreetly and respectfully.

“I have been loyal to the Congress for 16 years. If there are any differences, they should be discussed privately with the relevant individuals. That is all I want to say on the matter,” Tharoor emphasized.

He clarified that if there are any divergences in opinion, they are with only a few within the leadership, and that now is not the time to publicly dwell on such issues.

Tharoor’s inclusion in the government’s international outreach initiative for Operation Sindoor had reportedly caused friction within his party. Following that, another controversy emerged over his absence from a bypoll campaign in Kerala’s Nilambur constituency.

Addressing the reports, Tharoor explained, “I simply responded to a Malayalam question, expressing my best wishes to the Congress candidate—who is a friend—and I support his victory. I did, in fact, participate in the campaign.”

Asked to reflect on his current standing with the Congress, Tharoor said, “I have been a committed member for 16 years. Over time, I have built strong relationships with many colleagues and grassroots workers.”

Despite criticism from within Congress, including accusations of echoing BJP narratives during Operation Sindoor, Tharoor maintained a composed stance. He has previously been called a “super spokesperson” for the BJP by internal critics, who accused him of praising Prime Minister Modi.

Earlier tensions between Tharoor and the Kerala Congress unit had prompted the party’s central leadership to step in, urging unity ahead of state elections. However, signs of disapproval from the national leadership emerged when Tharoor was excluded from the Congress panel nominated for the Centre’s all-party foreign outreach teams to 33 nations.
