Scorching Heatwave Over Northwest India Expected to Ease from June 14, Says IMD

After weeks of blistering temperatures and sweltering conditions, a much-needed respite is finally on the horizon for people living in Northwest India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the intense heatwave that has gripped the region is expected to gradually subside starting June 14.
Over the past several days, many states have been reeling under extreme heat, with Rajasthan experiencing some of the highest temperatures in the country. Sri Ganganagar recorded a scorching 48°C, the highest in the plains, while other areas like Bikaner, Churu, and Phalodi saw temperatures soaring above 45°C. The impact was felt far and wide — from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh to parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, South Uttar Pradesh, and Northwest Madhya Pradesh.
IMD officials confirmed that while there may be no major drop in temperature for the next couple of days, a gradual cooling by 2–4 degrees Celsius is expected afterward, bringing welcome relief to millions affected by the oppressive heat.
Radheshyam Sharma, an IMD official, noted that Western Rajasthan, particularly districts like Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Bikaner, has been in the grip of a severe heatwave with temperatures staying well above 47°C. However, changes are on the way — strong, dust-laden southwest winds will continue for the next two to three days, followed by thunderstorm activity in Eastern Rajasthan between June 15–16. These storms could help lower the temperature further by June 18–20.
On June 10, several districts in Rajasthan were placed on high alert due to the severe conditions. Orange alerts were issued for Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh, while yellow warnings were sounded for Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli, and Dholpur.
For now, staying hydrated, avoiding peak sun hours, and monitoring local advisories remains crucial. But the good news is clear: relief from the unrelenting heat is finally on the way.
