“He Went With Her, Why Didn’t He Come Back?” A Mother’s Anguish After Son Is Killed On Honeymoon

What was supposed to be the beginning of a beautiful life together has ended in tragedy — and a mother’s heart is left shattered.
Uma Raghuvanshi, a mother from Madhya Pradesh, is still trying to process the nightmare that unfolded just days after her son Raja Raghuvanshi got married. Raja, only recently wed to Sonam Raghuvanshi, was found dead in Meghalaya, where the couple had gone for their honeymoon. His young bride, now at the centre of a murder investigation, is under police custody.
“I just want to ask her… Why didn’t you save him?” his grieving mother asks, her voice filled with disbelief and sorrow.
Raja and Sonam were married on May 11 in Indore. Just nine days later, they travelled to Meghalaya, excited for their honeymoon. On May 23, they reportedly checked out of their homestay in Nongriat village, but then vanished. It wasn’t until June 2 that Raja’s body was discovered near Weisawdong Falls, far from where they’d last been seen.
The discovery stunned the family. But what followed was even more disturbing — Sonam had disappeared, triggering a multi-state search. Late on Sunday night, she was found in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, visibly shaken, and made a phone call to her family from a roadside eatery. Moments later, she surrendered.
Despite the horrifying circumstances, Raja’s mother has not jumped to conclusions. “Raja was happy with her. He never said anything was wrong. I still don’t understand… What happened out there?” she says, searching for answers.
Investigators believe Sonam may have orchestrated the murder, possibly with help from a man named Raj Kushwaha, with whom she allegedly had a relationship. Several arrests have followed — including Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Akash Lodhi — all suspected of involvement.
Adding to the family’s pain, witnesses claim that Raj Kushwaha was seen with Sonam’s father at Raja’s funeral. “I had never even heard of him before,” Uma says.
Sonam, who spent four days at her in-laws’ house after the wedding, gave no indication of anything unusual, according to the family. The marriage was arranged, but both Raja and Sonam had agreed to it willingly.
“When he left for the honeymoon, he was wearing a gold chain. I had a bad feeling. But I never imagined this…” Uma recalls.
She adds that all of Sonam’s jewellery is still at home — except for a few personal pieces. “She only took her mangalsutra, a bracelet, and a couple of rings.”
The police claim that Sonam had planned the murder in advance, hiring contract killers. The investigation is ongoing, and Raja’s mother is now calling for a CBI probe.
“I don’t want revenge. I want the truth. If Sonam is innocent, let her go. But if she did this to my son, she should be punished. Whoever did this must be held accountable.”
