From Celebration to Catastrophe: Bengaluru Stampede Claims 11 Young Lives, Youngest Just 14

What began as a moment of immense joy for Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans turned into one of the darkest days the city has seen. A tragic stampede at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s IPL victory celebration claimed the lives of 11 people—most of them teenagers and youth under the age of 40. The youngest victim was just 14.
Divyanshi (14), Shivalinga (17), Chinmayi (19), Prajwal (20), Bhoomik (20), Shravan (20), Sahana (25), Akshata (27), Devi (29), Doresha (32), and Manoj (33)—they came with friends, full of dreams and excitement to cheer their team after its historic win. Instead, they became names in a list no one ever wants to write.
The tragedy is being attributed to hasty planning, poor crowd management, and an overwhelming turnout of over 3 lakh fans—nearly ten times the stadium’s capacity. The simultaneous hosting of a felicitation event at Vidhana Soudha for RCB by the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Governor pulled security away from the stadium, leaving police thinly spread.
Despite police objections and denied permissions, the Karnataka State Cricket Association and event organizers went ahead with the victory parade and open call for fans to join. A tweet from RCB confirming free passes sparked a mad rush. With little clarity and inadequate arrangements, the “first come, first serve” chaos turned deadly.
Crowds scaled gates, toppled barricades, and in the confusion, many tripped and were trampled. Forty-seven others were injured.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced financial aid for families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured. However, his comments—comparing the incident to tragedies like the Kumbh Mela stampede—sparked outrage. BJP leader Pralhad Joshi responded strongly, condemning the government’s handling of the event and demanding a judicial probe. “They were busy taking selfies while people died. It’s disgraceful,” he said.
The heartbreak of young lives lost has left Bengaluru grieving and the nation questioning: Could this have been prevented?
