Tragedy Mars RCB’s Historic Win: 11 Killed in Stampede During Bengaluru Celebrations

What began as a joyous occasion to celebrate Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) long-awaited IPL victory turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Bengaluru. At least 11 people lost their lives in a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered for a felicitation event organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).

The situation spiraled out of control as massive crowds, many waving team flags and chanting for their heroes, surged toward the venue. The RCB team had earlier made their way from the airport to Vidhana Soudha to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, attracting even more fans to line the streets.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as people fainted amidst the crush. Emergency services rushed to the spot, with police seen carrying unconscious individuals to nearby Bowring Hospital. Ambulances made repeated trips as the number of injured continued to rise.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar acknowledged the tragedy, saying the crowd was “uncontrollable.” “I apologise for the overcrowding,” he told reporters. “We arranged for more than 5,000 personnel… but this was a young, vibrant crowd. We couldn’t use force.”

He added that the program had been shortened due to the overwhelming crowd and urged people to remain calm. “I spoke to the Police Commissioner and will visit the hospital soon, though I don’t want to disturb the doctors. Lakhs of people came,” he said.

Despite the government’s decision to cancel the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium for safety reasons, the area remained flooded with fans. Visuals from Bengaluru Metro stations showed waves of people pouring out of trains, climbing trees, and crowding every available space to catch a glimpse of their cricketing idols.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi criticized the state government for what he called “poor planning and crowd mismanagement.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “This heartbreaking loss could have been avoided. The Karnataka government must be held accountable.”

Earlier that day, DK Shivakumar had personally welcomed the RCB team at the airport, handing out bouquets and proudly presenting Virat Kohli with both the RCB and Kannada flags.

What should have been a moment of pride and celebration for Bengaluru has now left the city in mourning. As families grieve, questions loom over how a celebration of sport turned into such a devastating event.
