Mid-Air Scare: IndiGo Flight Aborts Landing in Delhi Amid Heavy Storm and Turbulence

Passengers on an IndiGo flight from Raipur to Delhi had a tense experience on Sunday as the aircraft encountered severe turbulence while attempting to land at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. With strong winds, heavy rain, and low visibility due to a sudden storm, the pilot was forced to abort the landing and circle the skies before making a safe touchdown.

The incident occurred on flight 6E 6313, which was originally scheduled to land at 5:05 pm. However, just minutes before landing, the pilot informed passengers that due to dangerously strong winds — clocked at 80 kmph — the aircraft would climb to a higher altitude and wait for safer conditions. The plane eventually landed safely at 5:43 pm.

A video taken by a passenger from inside the cabin showed the aircraft shaking violently, with cries of panic from those on board. The turbulence rattled nerves as the storm intensified outside, making the landing unsafe at the time.

Delhi Airport had issued a weather advisory warning of delays and disruptions due to adverse conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a fast-moving cloud cluster moving east-southeast triggered the storm, with wind speeds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph across many areas. Gusts in Palam — where the airport is located — reached 65 kmph, while in Pragati Maidan they surged up to 76 kmph.

Meteorologists explained that the sudden change in weather was the result of multiple interacting systems: a Western Disturbance over north Pakistan, a cyclonic circulation over Haryana, and moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea. These factors combined to produce a short but intense storm over Delhi and nearby regions.

The IMD has also forecast similar conditions for Monday, with expectations of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph.

Thanks to the pilot’s quick decision and clear communication, the situation was handled safely — though it gave passengers quite a mid-air scare.
