“Flash Floods Strike Kullu After Heavy Rain, Vehicles Damaged But No Lives Lost”

A sudden spell of heavy rain triggered flash floods in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district on Saturday evening, damaging around 20 to 25 vehicles parked near Jagat Khana in Nirmand. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, confirmed Nirmand Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manmohan Singh.

The flash floods surged through the usually dry Sharshaya Nallah, sweeping away vehicles and leaving behind a trail of debris. Heart-wrenching videos showing vehicles being carried away by the strong currents are circulating widely on social media.

Adding to the chaos, the Hindustan-Tibet Road (National Highway-5) was blocked at Jhakri, between Rampur and Kinnaur, due to debris falling from the surrounding hills.

While some locals believe the incident was the result of a cloudburst, authorities have attributed it to intense and continuous rainfall. The rising water level of the Satluj River has added to public concerns.

In response to the extreme weather, the local meteorological department has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds up to 50 kmph. The warning covers all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh on May 27 and 28, with specific alerts for Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Chamba on May 25 and 26.

A wet spell is expected to continue over the next six days, although Saturday remained relatively dry in many parts. Light to moderate rainfall is predicted for mid-hills and plains on May 27 and 28, while isolated light rain is forecast for higher hills on May 25.

In terms of recorded rainfall, Rohru received 10 mm, followed by Jubbarhatti (2.6 mm), Jubbal (2.4 mm), and Chamba (2 mm). Gusty winds ranging from 37 to 56 kmph were observed in several regions including Reckongpeo, Tabo, Kotkhai, Bahaura, Seobag, and Narkanda.

Despite the heavy rains, temperatures remained largely unchanged, with Una recording the highest at 39.2°C and Keylong the lowest at 7.3°C.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather conditions remain unstable. Residents are urged to stay alert and avoid vulnerable areas.
