Storm Lashes Delhi-NCR: Power Cuts, Traffic Chaos, and Uprooted Trees Leave City Reeling

A sudden, powerful storm swept across Delhi and Noida on Tuesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat but also leaving a trail of chaos behind. The pre-monsoon showers, accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 79 kmph, caused widespread disruption across the National Capital Region.

Trees were uprooted, power lines snapped, and several hoardings and signboards came crashing down, damaging vehicles and blocking roads. A tragic incident near the Lodhi Road flyover claimed a life when a man was struck by a falling electric pole while crossing the road.

In Lodi Road, the storm brought a hailstorm, while visuals from other areas showed trees swaying violently under the force of the winds. In Noida, a “Welcome to Noida” signboard collapsed on the expressway, and another board fell on parked motorcycles.

Waterlogging added to the commuters’ woes in several parts of the city, including the Akshardham Flyover, Sikandra Road, and under Tilak Bridge near ITO. A billboard came down near the Laxmi Nagar red light intersection, adding to the traffic chaos.

Metro services were disrupted after external debris fell onto the tracks in multiple locations. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation confirmed delays on certain routes. Meanwhile, airlines issued advisories due to turbulent weather, warning passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport. A video from a Delhi-Srinagar IndiGo flight captured the tense moments during turbulence; the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar but sustained damage to its nose.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) explained that a cyclonic circulation over Haryana, connected to a larger trough stretching from Punjab to Bangladesh, caused the sudden weather shift. Moisture from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal contributed to the storm’s intensity.

While Delhi saw a slight dip in temperatures — from the blazing 50.2°C earlier to around 40.7°C — the storm was a stark reminder of how unpredictable pre-monsoon weather can be, especially in the face of extreme climate conditions.
