“Speak Marathi or No Payment”: Pizza Delivery Agent Harassed by Mumbai Couple Over Language

Mumbai – In a shocking incident that adds fuel to the ongoing language debate in Maharashtra, a pizza delivery agent was harassed and denied payment by a couple in Bhandup, Mumbai, simply because he did not speak Marathi.
The incident occurred on Monday at Sai Radhe building, where Rohit Lavare, a delivery agent for Domino’s, arrived to deliver an order. However, the delivery took an ugly turn when the couple refused to pay unless he spoke in Marathi—something that was never specified when placing the order.
Lavare, visibly upset, began recording the interaction. “Is there a rule that I must speak in Marathi?” he asked. “Yes, this is how it works here,” the woman responded from behind an iron grille door.
The delivery agent tried reasoning with the couple, saying, “If speaking Marathi was a condition, you shouldn’t have ordered. If you don’t want to pay, that’s fine.” The woman, meanwhile, objected to being recorded and threatened to film him instead.
As the argument escalated, the man accompanying the woman attempted to shut the door, but she resumed filming, leading to further confrontation. “If the order is incorrect, show me,” Rohit insisted. However, no issue was raised about the food itself—only his language.
The delivery agent was ultimately forced to leave without being paid. The company, Domino’s, has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
This incident has sparked fresh outrage on social media, with many questioning the growing intolerance over language preferences in cosmopolitan cities like Mumbai.
