Ajay Kumar, Former Defence Secretary, Takes Over as New UPSC Chairman

New Delhi – In a key appointment, former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar has been named the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). His appointment follows the conclusion of Preeti Sudan’s tenure on April 29, leaving the top position at UPSC vacant.

The decision was officially approved by President Droupadi Murmu and announced by the Union Personnel Ministry.

A retired 1985-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, Ajay Kumar brings decades of administrative experience to the role. He previously served as India’s Defence Secretary from August 23, 2019, until his retirement on October 31, 2022.

The UPSC is responsible for conducting the prestigious civil services examinations, which select candidates for top government positions including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others. The commission is led by a chairman and can have up to 10 members; currently, two member positions remain vacant.

As per the rules, the UPSC chairman serves for a term of six years or until the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Ajay Kumar’s leadership is expected to bring strong administrative insight to the nation’s premier recruitment body.
