As Pakistan Violates Ceasefire Within Hours, China’s Remarks Raise Eyebrows

In a swift escalation of tensions, peace along the India-Pakistan border was disrupted just hours after a ceasefire agreement was reached. Drone sightings in Jammu and Kashmir, reported by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on X, hinted at renewed hostilities — confirmed soon after as Pakistan breached the fragile truce.

Amid the rising tension, China’s prompt statement of support for Pakistan has drawn attention. In a phone call with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured that Beijing “stands firmly” with Islamabad, reiterating China’s support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence.

The timing of this assurance — almost immediately following the ceasefire violation — has raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles. Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed the exchange, stating that Mr. Dar had briefed his Chinese counterpart on the deteriorating regional situation and the military exchanges that followed the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Pakistan’s statement, China appreciated Pakistan’s “restraint” and commended its “responsible approach under challenging circumstances.” Wang Yi also reaffirmed China’s role as Pakistan’s “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partner and iron-clad friend.”

In parallel, Mr. Dar also reached out to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the unfolding situation.

India, on the other hand, responded strongly to Pakistan’s breach of the ceasefire. The Indian government condemned the violations, emphasizing that the understanding reached between the Directors General of Military Operations earlier that day had been broken.

“Our armed forces are responding adequately and appropriately to the violations,” the statement said. “We urge Pakistan to take meaningful steps to stop further breaches. The situation is being monitored with utmost seriousness, and our forces have been instructed to respond firmly to any further violations along the International Border and the Line of Control.”

Tensions remain high as both sides brace for what may follow, and international eyes turn to China’s visible show of solidarity with Islamabad.
