Congress MP and MLA Allegedly Attacked by Mob in Assam; Leaders Blame BJP

Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi, along with MLA Shivamani Bora, was allegedly attacked by a mob in Assam’s Nagaon district, ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections in May. The incident took place in Dhing, where Bordoloi’s vehicle was targeted. According to Congress, the MP suffered injuries, and MLA Bora’s vehicle was also vandalized by the mob.

Bordoloi described the attack, saying the mob, dressed in black clothes and covering their faces, surrounded their vehicle. “The attackers came from both sides of our car. The glass shards hit us, causing injury. It was an attempt to kill us,” Bordoloi said, expressing his shock and questioning the message the BJP aimed to send with such violence. He emphasized that the Congress would not be intimidated.

Bora, who was with Bordoloi at the time, also recounted the attack. “A mob of 15-20 people, with black cloth covering their faces, used iron rods to attack our vehicle. This is the third time I’ve been attacked, and I believe Himanta Biswa Sarma is behind this,” he alleged.

In response, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised swift action against the attackers and assured that Bordoloi’s security would be increased. However, Sarma also cast doubt on the allegations, questioning why such an attack would occur in areas populated by minorities, where Bordoloi and Bora were reportedly targeted.

The Congress party has filed a police complaint, claiming the BJP is responsible for the mob attack. The situation has raised serious concerns as tensions rise in the state ahead of the elections.
