Campbell Wilson Steps Down as Air India Express Chairman, Nipun Aggarwal to Take Over

In a significant leadership reshuffle, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has announced his decision to step down as the Chairman of Air India Express. Wilson, who had been serving in the role since June 2022, shared the update in an internal message to staff on Tuesday, calling it the right time to move on from the position. He will also step down from the budget airline’s board.

Taking his place will be Nipun Aggarwal, the current Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Air India, who is already a board member at Air India Express. Aggarwal will now oversee the low-cost carrier’s operations while continuing in his role as CCO at Air India—a move aimed at strengthening coordination across the Tata Group’s aviation network and commercial strategies.

To ensure smoother synergy between Air India and Air India Express, Capt. Basil Kwauk, the Chief Operations Officer of Air India, will also join the board of Air India Express, pending regulatory approvals.

Campbell Wilson noted that the foundational restructuring work is now largely done, and the focus ahead will be on optimizing the group’s fleet, routes, sales, and customer loyalty programs.

The Tata Group, which took over the reins of Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express in January 2022, continues its efforts to transform the airline into a modern, efficient, and competitive player on the global aviation stage.
