India Responds Firmly to Pahalgam Terror Attack: Downgrades Ties With Pakistan

In the wake of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians — including 25 Indians and one Nepali national — India has taken strong diplomatic and strategic steps against Pakistan, citing cross-border involvement in the incident.

On Wednesday evening, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met to assess the situation and finalize India’s response. The outcome marks a significant escalation in India-Pakistan relations.

Key Measures Announced:

Diplomatic Downgrade: Both India and Pakistan will reduce their high commission staff strength from 55 to 30 by May 1. India will expel all Pakistani military attachés, including defence, naval, and air advisors, who have been declared persona non grata. Reciprocal withdrawals will follow from India’s side in Islamabad.

Closure of Attari Border Post: The only operational land transit post between the two nations — the Integrated Check Post at Attari — will be shut down immediately. However, those who entered India with valid travel permits may return before May 1.

Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty: The 1960 treaty, a longstanding water-sharing agreement, is now suspended until Pakistan verifiably ends its support for cross-border terrorism.

Visa Restrictions: Pakistani nationals will no longer be eligible to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. Previously granted visas under the scheme have been cancelled.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, while addressing the media, confirmed these measures and said the government remains determined to bring those behind the Pahalgam attack to justice — along with their sponsors.

The CCS meeting also included a comprehensive briefing on the attack, highlighting cross-border linkages and pointing out that the incident occurred just after peaceful elections in Jammu and Kashmir — a signal of the region’s ongoing progress.

The Indian government acknowledged global support following the attack, with many nations expressing solidarity and condemning terrorism in all forms. The CCS expressed gratitude for these messages and reiterated India’s zero-tolerance policy against terror.

Foreign Secretary Misri emphasized that India would relentlessly pursue justice, drawing parallels with the recent extradition of Tahawwur Rana, accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

As the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives, India’s response underscores its resolve to act decisively against terrorism and those who enable it.
