Verstappen Snatches Pole in Thrilling Jeddah Qualifying, Edges Out Piastri by a Whisker

Max Verstappen delivered a stunning performance under the floodlights at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by just one-hundredth of a second to clinch pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver, who had a tough outing in Bahrain last weekend, bounced back in style with a near-flawless lap in a nail-biting qualifying session.
“Very happy! I definitely didn’t expect to be on pole here,” said a visibly thrilled Verstappen. “The car came alive in the night, we made some final changes and it was more enjoyable to drive. The grip was coming to me.”
Despite his pole, the Dutchman acknowledged the challenge ahead: “I think tomorrow in the race, it will be tough to keep them (McLaren) behind, but we’ll give it a good go.”
Piastri was narrowly denied his maiden pole, but his strong showing reinforced McLaren’s competitive pace. Meanwhile, his teammate and current championship leader Lando Norris suffered a setback, crashing during the top-10 shootout. He’ll start from the fifth row on Sunday.
With Norris leading the standings by three points over Piastri, and Verstappen just five points adrift, the championship battle is heating up as the fifth round of the 24-race season kicks off.
Mercedes’ George Russell will line up on the second row beside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, will start on row three.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, and Norris completed the top 10 on the grid.
The stage is set for an electrifying race in Jeddah.
