Delhi Extends EV Policy for Three More Months, No Ban on Petrol or CNG Two-Wheelers Yet

In a recent move, the Delhi government has extended its current Electric Vehicle (EV) policy for an additional three months, giving it more time to finalize the details of the new EV policy. This extension, which ensures no immediate ban on petrol and CNG two-wheelers, comes as a significant relief to many motorists in the city.

Originally, the new Delhi EV Policy 2.0 was expected to take effect from April 15, 2025. However, due to ongoing discussions and work on refining the policy, the government has opted to delay its implementation. The original policy, introduced in 2020, focused on reducing pollution and encouraging the adoption of cleaner mobility options.

The upcoming Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is expected to include several key changes aimed at accelerating the shift to electric vehicles across various sectors. The new draft policy will likely offer incentives for people who scrap their old petrol two-wheelers in favor of electric ones. Additionally, the policy will expand the reach of electric vehicles to public transport, goods carriers, and passenger vehicles, with a particular emphasis on enhancing charging infrastructure.

One of the more notable features of the policy is a proposed ban on the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers from August 15, 2026. Moreover, CNG three-wheelers will not be registered from August 15, 2025, and the government will stop renewing the permits of existing CNG three-wheelers.

Incentives are also part of the plan, with up to Rs. 36,000 available for women purchasing electric two-wheelers. There will also be a purchase subsidy of Rs. 10,000 per kWh (up to Rs. 30,000) for new EV two-wheeler buyers. The policy draft further includes plans to create 20,000 new jobs and establish a network of charging points along major roads, including the ring road and outer ring road, alongside increasing battery-swapping stations.

However, these details are still subject to final approval, with the draft policy being reviewed by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s cabinet. It’s expected that some changes may be made before it gets the green light.
