Delhi Court Denies Bail To Man Impersonating As Amit Shah’s Nephew

A Delhi court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Ajay Kumar Nayyar, who has been behind bars since November 2021 for allegedly impersonating Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s nephew to cheat a businessman out of Rs 3.9 crore.
Nayyar is accused of duping complainant Gursimerdeep Singh—who runs a leather business—by promising a Rs 90 crore government tender for supplying leather to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The scam allegedly began in June 2020, when Nayyar was introduced to Singh by a family friend at Jalandhar Gymkhana Club and posed as a high-level government connection.
Singh claimed he paid Nayyar Rs 3.9 crore through both cash and bank transfers. The court noted that Nayyar “played an active role” in the fraud, given the serious nature of the allegations and his deliberate misrepresentation.
Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Hardeep Kaur, who presided over the case at Patiala House Court, ruled that bail could not be granted at this stage. The judge said the gravity of the offence and potential for tampering with the investigation outweighed the time Nayyar has already spent in custody (over 3 years).
While Nayyar’s defense argued that other accused in the case had been granted bail and that the investigation against him was already complete, the court emphasized that his role in the crime was more serious and distinct from his co-accused.
Judge Kaur concluded that releasing Nayyar on bail at this stage would risk the integrity of the trial, especially as the cross-examination of the complainant is still underway. The court added that “the nature of accusation, potential influence on witnesses, and the danger of justice being obstructed” all weighed heavily against granting him bail.
