EWS Certificates on Hold in Delhi? AAP Accuses, BJP Denies Misuse Probe Behind Delay

In a growing political face-off, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the Delhi government, led by BJP’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has put a stop to issuing new Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificates—an essential document for availing reserved benefits in education, healthcare, and jobs.
At a press conference on Tuesday, AAP’s Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed the government had paused issuing new certificates amid concerns of misuse, citing official meeting minutes. “The revenue department has been directed not to issue any new EWS certificates until further notice, while a review of the existing ones is underway,” he said.
Bharadwaj warned that the move could immediately impact thousands of students applying to Delhi University, IP University, and other institutions that rely on EWS documentation for a 10 per cent quota. He also raised concerns about patients potentially being denied beds and services at hospitals that reserve facilities for the economically weaker.
Calling the decision a “deliberate attempt” to benefit private institutions by cutting off EWS access, Bharadwaj questioned why no action has been taken against officials who may have issued ineligible certificates. “Why punish the public? Why haven’t any SDMs, ADMs, or DMs been held accountable?” he asked.
However, the BJP hit back, strongly denying the claims. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva asserted that EWS certificate issuance has not been halted, and the chief minister has only called for updated guidelines to prevent fraud. “The benefits for the economically weaker sections are not being stopped. AAP is simply spreading misinformation to dodge scrutiny over its past irregularities,” he said.
Sachdeva further alleged that during AAP’s rule between 2015 and 2024, fake EWS and caste certificates were issued under political pressure, leading to misuse of government benefits. “Saurabh Bharadwaj knows an investigation could uncover a massive scam—that’s why he’s making noise,” he said.
As the political tug-of-war continues, the fate of thousands of families depending on EWS certificates hangs in uncertainty.
