Om Birla Keeps Promise, Performs Ritual At Wedding Of Pulwama Hero’s Daughter

In a moving tribute to a fallen hero, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stood by a promise he made six years ago—attending the wedding of a Pulwama martyr’s daughter not as a politician, but as family.
On Friday evening in Rajasthan’s Sangod village, Om Birla, who also serves as the MP from Kota-Bundi, took part in the wedding ceremony of 25-year-old Reena Meena, daughter of CRPF jawan Hemraj who laid down his life in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.
Keeping a vow he made to Hemraj’s widow, Madhubala, Birla performed the traditional Hindu ritual of Bhaat (or Maira)—a sacred role where a brother offers gifts to his sister for her daughter’s wedding. Joined by Rajasthan’s Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar, Birla presented customary gifts and an ‘odhani’, a symbol of honor and protection.
Madhubala, in return, welcomed Birla with a traditional tilak and aarti, embracing him as a brother in every sense.
Ever since Hemraj’s martyrdom, Om Birla has maintained a close bond with the family, visiting them each year on Raksha Bandhan, and celebrating festivals as one of their own. His presence at the wedding was more than ceremonial—it was a deeply personal act of solidarity and remembrance.
Birla’s gesture served as a reminder that promises made in grief can turn into lifelong commitments.
Hemraj was one of the forty CRPF personnel martyred in the brutal Pulwama attack on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber targeted a convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the cowardly assault.
Years may pass, but acts like these ensure that the sacrifices of India’s brave hearts—and the families they leave behind—are never forgotten.
