NIA Nabs Key Conspirator Behind Chandigarh Grenade Attack, Exposes International Khalistani Network

In a significant breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Abhijot Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, Punjab, for his crucial role in the grenade attack that rocked Chandigarh in September 2024. The attack, aimed at a retired Punjab Police officer’s home in Sector 10, was part of a larger conspiracy hatched by foreign-based Khalistani operatives.
Abhijot, who was already in jail for another grenade attack on a police station, emerged as a central figure in the plot following months of investigation. Acting on directions from US-based Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia—one of the masterminds—Abhijot conducted multiple reconnaissance visits to the target location during July and August 2024. He also arranged a stolen motorcycle with a fake number plate to carry out the attack.
The NIA’s probe revealed that Pakistan-based terrorist Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda and Happy Passia were among the four individuals chargesheeted in the case last month. Happy is also believed to have supplied pistols to both Abhijot and another accused, Rohan Masih, during August 2024 to aid the operation.
Despite two failed attempts to execute the attack in August, the assailants persisted. Their target—a former senior police officer—was believed to be residing at the Chandigarh home, though the plot ultimately did not succeed as intended.
Following Abhijot’s arrest, the NIA carried out a search operation at a location in Karnal, Haryana, to further uncover the extent of the network and identify additional suspects involved.
This arrest marks a critical step in dismantling the transnational terror links fueling such attacks and highlights the growing threat posed by foreign-based Khalistani elements.
