Tilak Varma Retired Out in Final Overs as Mumbai Indians Fall Short Against LSG

In a surprising turn of events during Friday’s IPL 2025 clash, Mumbai Indians made the bold call to retire out Tilak Varma with just seven balls left in their run chase against Lucknow Super Giants. The unusual decision came with MI needing 24 runs from the final 7 deliveries. Tilak, who had scored 25 off 23 balls, walked off the field right before the last delivery of Shardul Thakur’s over and was replaced by Mitchell Santner.
Despite the tactical switch, MI couldn’t pull off the win, as Avesh Khan held his nerve and successfully defended 22 runs in the final over, handing LSG a 12-run victory.
Explaining the decision post-match, MI skipper Hardik Pandya said, “It was obvious that we needed some big hits and Tilak was struggling to connect. In cricket, sometimes things just don’t go your way. The decision speaks for itself.”
This move puts Tilak Varma in a rare club of players who have been retired out in the IPL, including R Ashwin (2022), Atharva Taide (2023), and Sai Sudharsan (2023).
Earlier, LSG put up a strong total of 203/8, thanks to brisk half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh (60 off 31) and Aiden Markram (53 off 38). Hardik Pandya had a personal milestone despite the loss, picking up his first T20 five-wicket haul with figures of 5/36.
In response, Mumbai Indians could only manage 191/5. Suryakumar Yadav’s valiant 67 off 43 balls, which included nine fours and a six, kept hopes alive but wasn’t enough in the end.
Mumbai also missed the experience of Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out of the match after sustaining a knee injury during practice.
It was a night of bold moves and big moments—but ultimately, one that didn’t go Mumbai’s way.
