“Heartbroken Parents Accept Tragic Loss of Missing Indian Student in Dominican Republic”

The parents of 20-year-old Indian student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing from a beach in the Dominican Republic on March 6, have made an emotional statement, saying they are coming to terms with the heartbreaking reality that their daughter has drowned.

In a deeply moving video, her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, struggles to hold back tears as he explains that authorities from both the United States and the Dominican Republic informed them about the dangerous ocean conditions at the time. They have also confirmed that 22-year-old Joshua Riibe, who was previously a person of interest, is not a suspect.

With his wife, Sreedevi, sobbing beside him, Mr. Konanki shares, “Both authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident, and they have clarified that the person of interest was never a suspect.” His voice trembles as he continues, “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart…” before stopping as his wife, overwhelmed with grief, breaks down completely. As he comforts her, he painfully concludes, “…that we are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned. This is incredibly difficult for us to process. We kindly ask you to keep our daughters in your prayers.”

The family has requested for Sudiksha to be officially declared deceased to find closure.

Sudiksha, an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of the United States, was a student at the University of Pittsburgh. She had traveled to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with five friends on March 3.

Surveillance footage from March 5 captured her at the bar of the Riu Republica hotel before heading to the beach with a group, including Riibe. She was last seen entering the beach at 4:15 AM, while her friends had returned by 5 AM. Riibe, a student from Iowa, told authorities he had tried to help Sudiksha when they were pulled in by a strong wave, but she became exhausted. He was interviewed for six hours, and his passport was confiscated, but authorities do not consider him a suspect.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where Sudiksha’s family resides, confirmed that the request for her to be officially declared deceased is in line with her grieving parents’ wish to acknowledge her accidental drowning.

The tragic loss of Sudiksha has left her family devastated, as they now seek closure while holding onto her memories.
