Tragic Boat Capsize in Madhya Pradesh: Six Lives Lost, One Girl Still Missing

Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh – A routine boat ride to a temple on an island in Matatila Dam turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Tuesday evening when a boat carrying 15 people capsized. While eight people were rescued with the help of villagers, seven others went missing in the water.

Rescue teams worked through the night, and by Wednesday afternoon, the bodies of six victims, including three children, were recovered. One girl, 15-year-old Kumkum, is still missing, and search efforts continue.

Among the deceased were Kanha (7), Shiva (8), Chayna (14), Ramdevi (35), Leela (40), and Sharda (55). Survivor Ramdevi recounted the terrifying moments when water started gushing into the wooden boat, causing it to tilt and overturn. She, unable to swim, desperately flailed her hands in the water until a rescue boat arrived just in time to pull her to safety.

Shivpuri District Collector Ravindra Kumar Chaudhary stated that the accident may have been caused by water entering the boat or an imbalance. The administration is now looking into safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased, and those who helped rescue the survivors will be honored for their bravery.

As the community mourns the lives lost, rescuers remain hopeful of finding Kumkum and bringing closure to her family.
