Raghu Ram on Addressing Ajith by Name: “I Didn’t Realize the Impact”

New Delhi:
TV personality Raghu Ram, best known as the creator of MTV Roadies, is stepping into the world of South Indian cinema with a negative role in Ajith Kumar’s upcoming film, Good Bad Ugly. However, his first experience on set came with an unexpected cultural lesson.
In a recent interview with India Today, Raghu Ram shared how he was “told off” for casually addressing Ajith Kumar by his first name, unaware of the deep-rooted culture of respect for senior actors in the South film industry.
A Cultural Misunderstanding
Coming from Delhi and having worked in Mumbai, Raghu Ram was accustomed to addressing colleagues by name, regardless of seniority. He recalled, “Ajith introduced himself to me, and since we are of a similar age, I naturally started calling him by his name. But I soon realized that was not acceptable.”
The reaction from the crew was immediate.
“There was complete silence. Later, the team explained that it was considered disrespectful. The director and assistant director, during our Spain schedule, firmly told me that I needed to change that,” he admitted. Understanding the sentiment, he agreed to address Ajith as ‘Sir’, not because of Ajith himself, but to maintain the comfort of those around him.
“I think he’s just not used to people talking to him normally,” he added with a laugh.
Respect for Ajith’s Work Ethic
Despite the initial hiccup, Raghu Ram developed deep admiration for Ajith Kumar’s dedication and approach to life.
“He’s at a stage where he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. Yet, he continues to challenge himself. He has taught me that you define your own life, and you don’t let the world define you. He is the centre of his own universe. That’s truly inspiring,” he said.
Anticipation for Good Bad Ugly
Meanwhile, director Adhik Ravichandran has heightened excitement for the film with Ajith’s first-look poster, calling him “the most versatile performer ever.” The film is set for a theatrical release next month, and fans are eagerly waiting to see Ajith in a gripping new avatar.
For Raghu Ram, this project has not only been a professional milestone but also an eye-opening cultural experience—one that has deepened his appreciation for the respect and reverence South Indian cinema holds for its stars.
