Fresh Corruption Allegations Against AAP’s Satyendar Jain Amid Rs 7 Crore ‘CCTV Fraud’ Case

New Delhi:
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) finds itself in yet another corruption controversy as former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain faces fresh allegations of bribery in a Rs 571 crore CCTV installation project. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has accused him of accepting Rs 7 crore in exchange for waiving a Rs 16 crore penalty imposed for delays in the project.

The case, which has been under investigation since May 2023, revolves around the installation of over one lakh CCTV cameras across Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies. The ACB’s charges are reportedly based on a statement from a Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) officer, who claims that after delays in the initial phase, an additional 1.4 lakh cameras were ordered despite concerns over the quality of work.

Political Firestorm Erupts

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed AAP over the fresh allegations, accusing the party of attempting to suppress investigations while in power.

Virendra Sachdeva, BJP’s Delhi unit chief, alleged, “The Rs 571 crore tender was given to Bharat Electronics Limited, and when penalties for delays were to be imposed, Jain took a Rs 7 crore bribe to waive them. We had raised concerns earlier, but AAP tried to bury the case. Now they must answer.”

So far, neither Satyendar Jain nor AAP has responded to the charges.

More Legal Troubles for AAP Leaders

Jain, who was granted bail in October 2024 after spending two years in jail in an Enforcement Directorate (ED) money laundering case, is already facing prosecution in a disproportionate assets case, which was recently approved by President Droupadi Murmu.

Meanwhile, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia are also entangled in separate corruption cases:

Kejriwal is accused of misusing public funds for party promotions.

Sisodia is linked to a Rs 2,000 crore scam related to government school classrooms.

Both continue to face allegations in the Delhi liquor excise policy case, with a CAG report estimating losses of Rs 2,002 crore to the state.

AAP’s Struggles Amid Political Setback

AAP has dismissed these charges as politically motivated, claiming the BJP is orchestrating a smear campaign. The party also defended Kejriwal against allegations that Rs 45 crore of taxpayer money was used to renovate his official residence.

However, these legal troubles have come at a heavy cost. AAP suffered a major defeat in last month’s Delhi Assembly elections, with the BJP winning 48 out of 70 seats, taking control of the state government for the first time in 28 years.

As the investigations unfold, AAP finds itself in a battle not just for its leaders’ legal standing but also for its political survival.
