Health Ministry Warns IPL Against Surrogate Ads for Tobacco and Alcohol

The Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Atul Goel, has issued a strong advisory to the Indian Premier League (IPL), urging strict enforcement of regulations against surrogate advertising for tobacco and alcohol products. In a letter to IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, the DGHS emphasized the need to keep the sport free from any direct or indirect endorsements of such products by cricketers, commentators, or affiliated personalities.

The advisory also calls for a complete ban on the sale of tobacco and alcohol at all IPL-affiliated events and sports facilities. “IPL must strictly ensure that no tobacco or alcohol-related advertisements, including surrogate ads, appear within stadiums, during telecasts, or at any associated events,” the letter stated.

Additionally, the DGHS has urged the IPL management to discourage promotions by sportspersons and commentators who endorse products linked to alcohol or tobacco, reinforcing the need to protect public health and maintain ethical advertising standards in sports.

With the growing influence of cricket and its stars, the crackdown aims to curb the normalization of harmful substances in the sporting world. However, whether these guidelines will be strictly implemented remains to be seen.
