Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed as New SEBI Chairman, Succeeding Madhabi Puri Buch

The government has appointed Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). A 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, Pandey will take over the role from Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year tenure ends on February 28. Unlike her predecessors Ajay Tyagi and U.K. Sinha, who received extensions, Buch will step down as scheduled.
A Leader with Extensive Experience
Pandey brings a wealth of expertise in finance and administration, having served in various senior roles in the government. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK).
Key Roles in Government and Policy-Making
Before this appointment, Pandey was the Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, and Finance Secretary. He has also led several crucial departments, including:
Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM)
Department of Public Enterprises (DPE)
Department of Personnel and Training
His experience spans both the Union Government and the Odisha State Government, as well as a tenure at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). He has held key positions such as Joint Secretary in the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce.
A Strong Administrative Background
At the state level, Pandey has overseen Odisha’s Health, Finance, Transport, and Commercial Taxes departments. He has also led institutions like the Odisha State Finance Corporation and Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
As he steps into the role of SEBI Chairman, Pandey is expected to bring his vast expertise to India’s financial markets, ensuring strong regulatory oversight and fostering investor confidence.
