Samajwadi Party Leader Abdullah Azam Khan Walks Free After 17 Months in Jail

Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh: After spending nearly a year and a half behind bars, Samajwadi Party leader Abdullah Azam Khan was released from Hardoi jail on Tuesday. His supporters and party leaders gathered outside the prison to welcome him back, celebrating his return.

Abdullah Khan, a former MLA from Suar in Rampur, is the son of veteran SP leader and former state cabinet minister Azam Khan, who remains incarcerated. Dressed in a white kurta-pyjama with a dark waistcoat and sporting a neatly tied ponytail, Abdullah Khan was escorted out by security personnel around noon.

While he chose not to speak to the media, his lawyer, Satnam Singh Nattu, expressed gratitude for his release. “As the entire nation knows, Mohammad Azam Khan and his family have faced persecution and imprisonment. Today, we thank God for paving the way for Abdullah Bhai’s release,” he said.

His release comes after securing bail in a case related to enemy property registered in 2020. Over the years, 45 cases have been filed against him, including one involving machine theft, but he has now obtained bail in all of them.

Delays in bail verification had prolonged his time in jail, but on Monday, the MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court’s release order finally reached Hardoi Jail, clearing the way for his freedom.

SP leader and Moradabad MP Ruchi Veera, who was present in Hardoi, reaffirmed her faith in the judiciary. “Justice has been served. Though it took time for the release documents to be processed, we are relieved and grateful.”

Abdullah Azam Khan, accompanied by a convoy of supporters, reached his residence on Jail Road by the afternoon. When approached by reporters, he assured them he would speak at a later time. Meanwhile, his father, Azam Khan, remains lodged in Sitapur jail, facing multiple legal battles.
