Bengaluru’s Water Crisis: ₹5,000 Fine for Misuse Amid Severe Shortage

Bengaluru is facing a serious water crisis as rising temperatures and declining groundwater levels have led to acute shortages. In response, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has introduced strict measures to conserve drinking water, including a ₹5,000 fine for non-essential use.
BWSSB Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar announced the decision, specifying that activities like washing vehicles, gardening, construction work, decorative fountains, and road cleaning are now banned from using drinking water. However, malls and cinema halls are exempt from this restriction. Violators will face a ₹5,000 fine, with repeat offenders charged an additional ₹500 daily.
The restrictions have been enforced under Sections 33 and 34 of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964. The BWSSB emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing to high temperatures and inadequate rainfall that have severely depleted groundwater levels. The board urged residents to use water responsibly and report violations by calling the BWSSB helpline at 1916.
Bengaluru’s rapid urbanization and growing population have put immense pressure on its water resources, increasing the city’s dependence on external sources like the Cauvery River, which are also under strain. The new measures aim to prioritize drinking water for essential needs.
Local reactions to the ban are mixed. Some residents support the move as a necessary step to address the crisis, while others worry about its impact on daily life and businesses. Many believe that in addition to these restrictions, long-term solutions like rainwater harvesting and improved water management are essential.
As the city prepares for a challenging summer, the success of these conservation efforts will depend on the cooperation of Bengaluru’s residents and the adoption of sustainable water management practices.
