BJP to Choose New Delhi Chief Minister Tomorrow: Sources

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to select the next Chief Minister of Delhi on Monday afternoon, more than a week after securing a decisive victory in the state elections, ousting Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party.

The delay in selecting the new leader was attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s international visits to France and the US, from which he returned on Saturday. Sources indicate that an observer for the selection process could be named tonight or by tomorrow morning, with the meeting likely to take place at the Delhi BJP office.

This marks the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 26 years. The party is planning a grand oath-taking ceremony, possibly at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, with over 200 MPs, former MPs, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states, and party workers expected to attend.

Several names are being considered for the top post, including Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Saheb Singh Verma. Other contenders include former Delhi BJP chief and Malviya Nagar MLA Satish Upadhyay, senior party leader Vijender Gupta, newly elected Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood, and Uttam Nagar MLA Pawan Sharma.

Sources also suggest that the BJP may select a woman as the next Chief Minister, with four women MLAs in the party—Neelam Pahalwan, Rekha Gupta, Poonam Sharma, and Shikha Roy—being potential candidates.

The BJP secured a commanding victory, winning 48 out of 70 seats, a significant increase from its previous tally, while AAP was reduced to just 22 seats.
