Horrific Ragging Incident at Kerala Nursing College: Five Students Arrested

In a shocking incident from Kerala’s Kottayam district, five students of a nursing college have been arrested for allegedly subjecting a first-year student to brutal ragging. Disturbing video footage has surfaced, revealing the harrowing ordeal faced by the victim, highlighting the ongoing menace of ragging despite strict anti-ragging laws.

The video, which has gone viral, shows the junior student tied to a bed, writhing in pain as his seniors mercilessly torture him. In a horrifying display of cruelty, one of the accused repeatedly pricks the victim with the sharp end of a compass while he cries out in agony. His body, covered in multiple injuries, is seen being doused with a white lotion, allegedly to intensify his pain. The assailants even pour the liquid into his eyes and mouth.

The torment did not stop there. A heavy dumbbell was placed on the victim’s genitals, causing excruciating pain, while cloth clips were painfully tugged at his nipples. Throughout the ordeal, the attackers are heard laughing as the victim begs for mercy.

The incident came to light when three first-year students from Government Nursing College, Kottayam, filed a police complaint, revealing that they had endured months of harassment. The victims claimed the torture began in November 2024 and continued for nearly three months before they finally sought help.

Following an investigation, five senior students—Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeeva (18), Rijil Jith (20), and Vivek (21)—were arrested and subsequently suspended from the college. In addition to the physical abuse, the accused allegedly extorted money from juniors every Sunday to fund their alcohol consumption, brutally beating those who refused to pay.

The matter came to light when one of the victims, unable to bear the abuse any longer, confided in his father. Encouraged by his family, he filed a police complaint, leading to the arrests.

This incident follows another tragic case in Kochi, where 15-year-old schoolboy Mihir Ahammed allegedly took his own life due to severe bullying. According to his mother, Mihir was subjected to brutal physical abuse, verbal humiliation, and was even forced to lick a toilet seat at school—a trauma that reportedly drove him to end his life.

These heart-wrenching incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger enforcement of anti-ragging measures to protect vulnerable students from such inhumane abuse.
