Delhi Election 2025: BJP Triumphs After 27 Years, AAP Faces Major Setback

The counting of votes for the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections began at 8 AM on Saturday, February 8, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking an early lead and maintaining a stronghold throughout the process. In a historic victory, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, ending its 27-year-long wait to reclaim power in the national capital. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to win 22 seats, while the Congress suffered a complete wipeout, failing to secure even a single constituency.
The high-stakes election saw a voter turnout of 60.44%, slightly lower than the 62.59% recorded in 2020. The results were largely in line with pre-poll predictions that had forecasted a BJP landslide. However, one of the biggest surprises came with the defeat of AAP chief and outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from the prestigious New Delhi constituency. BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma unseated Kejriwal with a margin of 4,089 votes, marking a stunning upset.
Several senior AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Awadh Ojha, also faced unexpected defeats against BJP candidates. Despite the party’s overall loss, Delhi CM Atishi managed to hold onto her Kalkaji seat. Speaking to the media, she acknowledged the people’s mandate, saying, “We accept the results with humility, but this is not a time for celebration.”
The BJP’s emphatic victory has been hailed by party leaders and supporters, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it a moment of “Delhi’s liberation from AAP.” As the final results are confirmed, political observers are analyzing the shift in voter sentiment that led to this dramatic change in Delhi’s political landscape.
